How the Modified Bavarian Formula works
German universities do not read a CGPA or a percentage directly. They convert your marks to the German scale, where 1.0 is the best grade and 4.0 is the lowest pass. The Modified Bavarian Formula is the method most German universities and uni-assist use for this conversion, and it is what this German grade calculator runs.
- Nmax is the best grade possible in your system: 10 for a 10-point CGPA, 100 for a percentage, 4.0 for a US-style GPA.
- Nmin is the lowest passing grade in your system, for example 4.0 CGPA or 40%. It is the pass mark, not your lowest mark.
- Nd is the grade you obtained, in the same units as Nmax and Nmin.
Worked examples
- CGPA 8.2 out of 10, pass mark 4.0: 1 + 3 × (10 − 8.2) ÷ (10 − 4) = 1 + 3 × 1.8 ÷ 6 = 1.9, which is “gut” (good).
- 72% with a 40% pass mark: 1 + 3 × (100 − 72) ÷ (100 − 40) = 1 + 3 × 28 ÷ 60 = 2.4, also “gut”.
- GPA 3.3 out of 4.0, pass mark 2.0: 1 + 3 × (4.0 − 3.3) ÷ (4.0 − 2.0) = 2.05, which rounds to 2.1.
A result above 4.0 means the grade is below your scale’s pass mark, so it is not a passing grade in Germany. The calculator shows both the exact value and the one-decimal grade, because universities differ on whether they round or cut off after the first decimal.
German grading system
What German grades mean
Overall degree grades are read in four passing bands. Individual exam results are usually 1.0, 1.3, 1.7, 2.0, 2.3, 2.7, 3.0, 3.3, 3.7, 4.0 or 5.0, while converted overall grades can fall anywhere in between.
| German grade | German term | English | What it signals to admissions teams |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 – 1.5 | Sehr gut | Very good | Outstanding. Competitive for almost any programme. |
| 1.6 – 2.5 | Gut | Good | Strong. Meets the requirement of most Master’s programmes. |
| 2.6 – 3.5 | Befriedigend | Satisfactory | Acceptable for many programmes, tougher for restricted-admission courses. |
| 3.6 – 4.0 | Ausreichend | Sufficient | The lowest pass. Very few programmes will consider it. |
| Above 4.0 | Nicht bestanden | Not passed | Not a passing grade. |

What German grade do you need to get admitted?
There is no single cut-off for Germany. Each programme sets its own requirement, and the German grade you calculate here is one part of your application.
- Many public-university Master’s programmes accept an overall grade of about 2.5 to 3.0, with some stricter and some more open.
- Popular and restricted-admission (NC) programmes, such as in computer science, data science or business, often attract applicants with 2.0 or better.
- Private universities and universities of applied sciences are usually more flexible on grades and put more weight on experience and interviews.
- A weaker grade can be balanced with a strong statement of purpose, relevant internships or projects, language scores (IELTS, TOEFL, TestDaF or a German level) and a clear reason for choosing the programme.
Treat these ranges as a starting point and read the admission page of every programme you shortlist. Our counsellors check every shortlisted programme against your profile. See how we help on Study in Germany, or start with a free profile evaluation.
Why your result can differ from uni-assist or your university
- A different pass mark. Nmin changes the result. Use the pass mark in your university’s grading scheme.
- Rounding. Some universities round to one decimal, others cut off after the first decimal. The calculator shows the exact value so you can see both.
- CGPA versus percentage. Converting a CGPA to a percentage first, using your university’s own formula, can give a slightly different figure than using the CGPA directly.
- University-specific rules. Some universities and uni-assist apply their own tables. The converted grade in your uni-assist preliminary review document (VPD) is the one your application is judged on if you apply through uni-assist.
FAQ
German grade calculator: common questions
A German grade calculator converts the marks on your transcript (a CGPA, a percentage or a GPA) into the German grading scale, where 1.0 is the best grade and 4.0 is the lowest passing grade. German universities and uni-assist use the converted grade to compare your degree with German applicants.
It uses the Modified Bavarian Formula: German grade = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nd) ÷ (Nmax − Nmin). Nmax is the best grade in your system, Nmin is the lowest passing grade and Nd is the grade you obtained.
Choose “CGPA / 10”, enter your overall CGPA and keep the pass mark at 4.0 unless your university uses another one. With a pass mark of 4.0, a CGPA of 9.0 converts to 1.5, 8.0 to 2.0, 7.0 to 2.5 and 6.0 to 3.0.
Choose “Percentage”, enter your overall percentage and set the pass mark from your marksheet (40% is common). With a 40% pass mark, 90% converts to 1.5, 80% to 2.0, 70% to 2.5 and 60% to 3.0.
4.0 is the lowest passing grade. Anything above 4.0 is a fail. When you enter exactly your scale’s pass mark, the formula returns 4.0, and a mark below it returns more than 4.0.
It depends on the programme. Many public-university Master’s programmes accept applicants with an overall grade of about 2.5 to 3.0, while popular or restricted-admission programmes often attract applicants with 2.0 or better. Always check the admission page of each programme, because limits change from year to year.
Use the lowest mark that still counts as a pass at your university, as printed on your marksheet or grading scheme. It is not your lowest mark. A different pass mark changes the result, so a 10-point CGPA with a pass mark of 5.0 gives a different German grade than one with 4.0.
Not always. The calculator gives a close estimate, but uni-assist and individual universities decide the official conversion. Differences usually come from the pass mark used, rounding versus cutting off after one decimal, or a university’s own conversion table. Treat the result as a planning tool and check it against your uni-assist or university result.
Open the “Target planner” tab, enter the German grade you want and the calculator shows the CGPA, percentage or GPA you need. The reverse chart on this page lists the common targets for each scale.
