Explained

How Italian grades work

Exams: 18 to 30

  • Each exam is marked out of 30. The lowest pass is 18.
  • An outstanding result can be marked 30 e lode (30 cum laude).
  • Your average of exam marks is shown on a 30-point scale.

Degree: 66 to 110

  • The final degree mark is out of 110. The lowest pass is 66.
  • The examining committee can add “lode” to a 110 (110 e lode).
  • Foreign grades are converted to this scale for comparison and admission.

Italian universities and CIMEA each convert foreign grades in their own way. This page uses the widely used linear formula so you can plan. Always check the minimum grade or the points formula on each programme’s admission page.

Formula

The conversion formula

The calculator uses a straight-line conversion between your best and lowest passing grades and the Italian scale. A published example from the University of Trento uses the same idea:

Italian grade = (G − Gmin) ÷ (Gmax − Gmin) × (Imax − Imin) + Imin

G is your grade, Gmin the lowest pass mark on your scale, Gmax the best possible grade, and Imin and Imax the ends of the Italian scale (66 and 110 for a degree, 18 and 30 for exams). Example: pass mark 60, best 100, score 80 gives (80 − 60) ÷ 40 × 44 + 66 = 88/110.

The tool applies the same formula to the 18–30 exam scale as a convenient estimate. That use goes beyond the published degree-scale example, so treat the /30 figure as a guide only.

FAQ

Questions, answered honestly

A common method is a linear conversion between your lowest passing grade and your best possible grade: (G − Gmin) ÷ (Gmax − Gmin) × 44 + 66. This calculator does it for CGPA out of 10, percentage, GPA out of 4 or a scale you define.

Exams are passed with 18 out of 30. A degree is awarded with a minimum of 66 out of 110. A top degree can be marked 110 e lode (110 cum laude).

No. Each university, and tools such as CIMEA’s comparison service, may use their own method. This calculator is an indicative planning tool. Check the admission page of every programme you shortlist.

There is no single requirement. Many programmes publish a minimum degree mark or a points score, and merit scholarships rank applicants by marks. Use the target planner to see what you need on your own scale, then check each programme.

Use the pass mark in the grading scheme printed on your transcript. Many Indian universities use 4.0 on a 10-point scale or 40% for percentage, but yours may differ.

No. Italian universities may ask for a Declaration of Value, a CIMEA statement of comparability or other recognition documents. This tool only helps you understand where your marks sit on the Italian scale.
